May 27 – Jack Warner (pictured) claimed today that he is set for a senior role in Trinidad and Tobago’s new Government but that it would not affect his position with FIFA.

Warner, the chairman of the United National Congress (UNC), revealed that new Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar had offered him a role in her new administration.

He said: ”Initially I said I didn’t want any [position] and I meant that seriously, but the Prime Minister insisted that I must be in her Cabinet and I said okay.”

Warner was an influential part of of the People’s Partnership in securing a victory over the People’s National Movement (PNM), leading to Persad-Bissessar becoming Trinidad and Tobago’s first female Prime Minister.

When he was in opposition, Warner acted as Shadow Minister of National Security, Sport and Foreign Affairs.

Warner retained his seat as MP for Chaguanas West with a majority of 17,296, the biggest in the General Election.

But he claimed that he could combine his new Government position with his roles as FIFA vice-president and President of CONCACAF.
