November 3 – Stephen Keshi (pictured) has been named as the new coach of Nigeria and told to take the country to the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

A Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Executive Committee meeting in Abuja confirmed that the former national team captain was to lead the team once more, this time from the dugout.

Samson Siasia was sacked last week after Nigeria failed to qualify for the 2012 African Nations Cup in Equatorial Guinea and Gabon.

Keshi managed Togo to the World Cup in Germany, in 2006, and was a member of the last Nigerian team to lift the African Nations Cup, in 1994, so his appointment has been met with optimism and he will be given free rein to pick his assistants.

After the country’s failure to reach next year’s African Nations Cup, Keshi has been tasked with qualifying for the next tournament, in South Africa 2013, as well as Brazil 2014.

Meanwhile, Nigeria could have a legal battle with Siasia after BBC Sport revealed he was taking action against the NFF for breach of contract.

His legal team have said a 30 days’ notice requirement had been violated and he had been denied certain working conditions.
