February 9 – The Confederation of African Football (CAF) and the United Nations Regional Office for Central Africa (UNOCA) have agreed to work together to promote peace and security in central Africa.
The President of CAF, Issa Hayatou, met with Abou Moussa (pictured), the head of UNOCA, in Libreville, Gabon, one of the venues where the Africa Cup of Nations is currently taking place.
Hayatou indicated that he would meet Moussa in Yaoundé, Cameroon, and said: “CAF will be with you to secure, consolidate or promote peace, which is a noble cause.”
Moussa praised the spirit of the African Nations Cup, and said that the fair play on show would help create peace across the continent.
“Players, spectators and all others involved in the tournament so far have shown a remarkable fair play,” he said.
“The climate of peace that results is a credit to the continent in general and central Africa in particular.”
The issue of peace has been prevalent at the tournament, with Mali and Barcelona star Seydou Keita making an emotional call for an end to bloodshed in his homeland after helping them to beat hosts Gabon on penalties at the quarterfinal stage.
