April 26 – Major League Soccer commissioner Don Garber has said the league is hoping to announce a second franchise in New York in the next four to six weeks. That team will not be the New York Cosmos.
Manchester City is the leading candidate to operate Major League Soccer’s 20th franchise, and may pay a $100 million fee to set up the team to be based in a yet to be approved stadium in Queens, New York.
Garber, in Toronto for the MLS commercial summit, said: “We’re hopeful to be able to announce a 20th team within the next four to six weeks, so the timing has accelerated a little bit.”
In December, according to Bloomberg, Manchester City owner Sheikh Mansour was close to a deal with the MLS for $100 million.
Manchester City will be in New York at the end of May to play a friendly against Chelsea and it seems possible that an announcement could be made then.
