June 21 – CONCACAF president Jeffrey Webb, who has done much to stabilise the region since taking over a year ago, will be more delighted than anyone at the organisation’s decision to stage next year’s CONCACAF Women’s Under-20 tournament in his native Cayman Islands.

The January competition will see eight teams from across the region vying for the three spots in the Under-20 Women’s World Cup, to be played in Canada in July next year. The three will join Canada which automatically qualifies as host.

“We are proud to witness the continued growth of the sport inclusive of both genders in our Confederation, traditionally among the strongest in the world in the women’s game,” said Jeffrey Webb. “The CONCACAF Women’s Under-20 Championship in the Cayman Islands and the upcoming World Cup in Canada will give us yet another opportunity to showcase these advances on the world stage.”

The regional championship kicks off on January 9 and concludes with the third-place match and final on January 19.

Hosts the Cayman Islands will be joined by three-time champions the United States and 2010 runner-up Mexico, plus teams from the Caribbean and Central America yet to be determined.

Meanwhile this year’s CONCACAF women’s under-17 Championship gets under way on October 30 in Montego Bay, Jamaica, featuring eight teams from across the region, with two places for the under-17 Women’s World Cup in Costa Rica next year up for grabs.
