May 21 – The US has rapidly become the country of choice for Central and South American championships. Earlier this month CONCACAF announced it would be hosting the Copa America Centenario in the US in 2016. Now the Central American Football Union (UNCAF) have confirmed they will play their 25th anniversary Central American Cup in the US.
UNCAF will play its tournament between September 3 and 13. The winning team will receive a direct route to the 2016 Copa America Centenario. The top four teams qualify for 2015 Gold Cup with the fifth placed team playing off for the final Fold Cup spot against the fifth placed team from the CFU Caribbean Cup competition.
The Central American Cup was first played in 1991 and 2014 will be its 13th edition. Costa Rica and Honduras have hosted it three times each, while it has been played in El Salvador, Guatemala and Panama twice.
Costa Rica is the current Central American Cup champion and has won the tournament seven times. Honduras holds three titles, while Guatemala and Panama have each won once. Belize, El Salvador and Nicaragua are yet to win a title.
The match dates for the 2014 tournament have been co-ordinated to fit in with the FIFA’s international calendar meaning that national teams will be able to select their strongest teams without fear of club vs country clashes.
UNCAF will have two member associations competing at the World Cup in Brazil, Costa Rica and Honduras.
Host cities for the event will be announced by the organising committee at a later date. In the US, UNCAF is working closely with Soccer United Marketing (SUM) on both marketing rights and host city selection, SUM has extensive experience of marketing Hispanic nations and clubs in the US, holding promotional and marketing rights to Mexican national team games played in the US, as well as rights to Mexico’s most popular sports team, Club Deportivo Guadalajara (Chivas).
