July 8 – Car manufacturer Nissan has expanded its football media sponsorship as the weekend sponsor of Sky Sports’ Premier League action in a three-year partnership.
This is the first foray by the Japanese firm that is a global sponsor of UEFA’s Champions League into a major Premier League associated partnership.
Nissan, which has a manufacturing plant in Sunderland in the north-east of England, is interestingly showing a commitment to UK media at a time when there are fears over the long-term future of the UK plant. Sunderland as an area voted overwhelmingly (more than 70%) for the Brexit. Nissan, which is a key employer (more than 20,000) in one of the UK’s least affluent regions, had urged its employees to vote remain.
While doubts may remain over the plant’s future in Sunderland, Nissan’s commitment to doing business in the UK seems to have been reinforced in the UK.
A Nissan statement said: “As part of their promise to offer ‘innovation that excites’ Nissan is able to bring excitement to thousands of football fans around the world via exclusive assets such as Goal of the Week and the chance to be a Centre Circle Carrier during matches.”
The new Premier League TV deals start next season and Sky will carry more live Premier League matches in the UK than ever before. The Nissan sponsorship includes every game shown on Saturday lunchtime as well as all the games that form Sky Sports’ Super Sundays. In the Republic of Ireland, this also means games broadcast on Saturday at 3pm.
Chris Marsh, Marketing Director at Nissan GB, said; “Innovation and excitement are at the heart of what we do at Nissan, and as we saw last season the unexpected nature of the Premier League makes it one of the most exciting football leagues in the world. This coming season is sure to be one of the most hotly anticipated in years. Sky Sports offers customers more of the biggest, most exciting games than other providers. It’s just one of the reasons why this partnership is such a perfect match for Nissan.”
