AFC kicks off landmark social responsibility programme in Brunei

July 22 – Brunei national team stars were on hand to help launch a series of social responsibility activities today in conjunction with the AFC U-14 Festival of Football 2016 for the ASEAN zone in Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei Darussalam.

An Asian Football Confederation (AFC) initiative, it is being delivered in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, National Football Association of Brunei Darussalam (NFABD).

The AFC said the “event has been designed in alignment with the AFC’s new Vision and Mission, with health being one of the five focus areas of social responsibility.”

More than 10,000 pamphlets were distributed covering critical issues which include obesity, diabetes and anti-smoking.

AFC President Shaikh Salman Bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa said: “The AFC has always placed great importance on using football as an enabler for social development. At the forefront of our new Vision is the desire to enrich and improve communities across the continent.

“Through these efforts, the AFC is delighted to play a role in ensuring that football continues to leave a lasting impact on Asia’s future generation.”

The programme will also see 50 grassroots coaches, physical education teachers as well as representatives from NGOs, government agencies and the corporate sector participate in a ‘Holistic Development through Social Responsibility’ seminar which will focus on individual, community and social development through football.

Other activities include a contribution to children from an orphanage and less fortunate families as well as a festival and stadium awareness campaign.

NFABD President, HRH Prince Sufri Bolkiah said: “The National Football Association of Brunei Darussalam and our partners would like to thank the AFC for this generous and inspiring initiative. This is a milestone event for football in Brunei and it provides an excellent basis for us to deliver better quality programmes throughout the nation.”
