Premier League transfer spend hits £475m in July with Pogba deal to come

Transfer money record

August 4 – Premier League clubs have spent £475 million in the month since the summer transfer window opened on 1 July, according to business analysts Deloitte, slightly down on the £515 million outlay  at the same stage last year.

An anticipated record-breaking close-season splurge has yet to materialise but that could all change given the imminent world record transfer of Paul Pogba to Manchester United from Juventus.

Premier League sides are in fact still tipped to near the £1bn mark by the end of August, with a flurry of big deals currently in the offing, Pogba being top of the list.

Manchester City, under new manager Pep Guardiola, have already forked out more than £100 million on a series of stellar signings and look set to spend big again on Everton’s John Stones.

“The prospect of increased revenue from the new broadcast deals next season has encouraged Premier League clubs to invest in this window in order to be as competitive as possible,” said Alex Thorpe of Deloitte’s Sports Business Group.

“With a month of the window still to go, some significant deals in the pipeline and a number of clubs yet to enter the market, we may see another summer of record Premier League spending, possibly breaking the £1bn barrier for the first time.”
