The ISL is India’s new high profile league that is central to the top level reorganistation of the game in India, attempting to replicate the commercial and media success of cricket’s IPL that has revolutionised that sport worldwide.
While it is unlikely that the ISL will have the same global impact there is little doubt that the Indian market is a sleeping giant in the football world that is showing some signs of awakening. The eight-team ISL plays a short season that starts in October and ends with its final in mid-December.
Sportradar has boosted its activities in Asia with a long term deal with the Asian Football Confederation (AFC). Andreas Krannich, Sportradar’s Managing Director for Integrity Services said: “Following our extended partnership with the AFC, this cooperation is a special one, allowing us to work with such a vibrant league that is pivotal to growing the sport in the subcontinent. It is wonderful to see a league so proactive and committed to integrity”.
The ISL’s objective is to raise the profile of football in India and elevate the standard of play while at the same stimulating grassroots programmes to develop local players. Launched in 2014, the league claims in its first season to have “achieved the rare milestone of becoming fourth largest football league in the world in terms of average stadium attendance.”
An Indian Super League spokesperson said: “The Hero Indian Super League continues to go from strength to strength and by bringing Sportradar on board, we have highlighted our commitment to the integrity of our league and we look forward to another exciting competition.”
