Korea’s Chung Mong Gyu steps up as AFC East Zone vice president

September 26 – Korea Republic’s Chung Mong Gyu has taken over as the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) East Zone Vice-President following the resignation of China’s Zhang Jilong.

Jilong’s started in football administration started in 1978 in the Chinese Football Association (CFA) ad from 2000 to 2011 served as the chairman of the AFC Finance Committee. He was elected AFC Vice-President for the first time in 2002 and retained this position in the next two elections. He returned as AFC Acting President from June 2011 to May 2013 and was also appointed to the FIFA Executive Committee.

AFC President Shaikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa paid tribute to Jilong (China saying: “On behalf of the AFC Executive Committee, I would like to put on record my thanks for Zhang Jilong’s support and outstanding work.

“Through his tireless devotion, unparalleled expertise and love for our game, Jilong dedicated so much to Asian football – especially when he was acting President in 2013. In every way, Asian football has certainly been enriched and inspired by his dedicated service.”

South Korean business executive Chung Mong-gyu was re-elected unanimously as head of the South Korean FA in July. He is the chief executive of construction firm Hyundai Development Co and was previously commissioner of the K League, which governs professional football in the country. He was already a member of the Asian Football Confederation Executive Committee.

Chung is the younger cousin of banned former FIFA Vice President Chung Mong-joon.
