October 19 – FC Barcelona and Brazil star Neymar will put pen to paper on the new five-year deal he agreed with his club in the summer this week. The deal will tie the Brazilian to Barcelona until 2021.
Earlier this year, Neymar had been linked to Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester United, but in July Barcelona confirmed that Neymar had agreed to a contract extension of five years. The player later admitted that he talked to the French champions about a possible move.
The new deal with Barcelona hadn’t been signed due to Neymar’s Olympic commitments, culminating with a gold medal victory, and his ensuing time off. The club confirmed on Monday, though, that the 24-year-old, who joined the club from Santos in 2013, will sign his new terms at the end of the week.
“The act to officialise Neymar’s contract renewal will take place on Oct. 21 at the club’s offices at 3pm,” read a statement. “As the club have previously announced, Neymar’s new contract with FC Barcelona will end on Jun. 30, 2021.”
Neymar will earn €16 million a year, according to Spanish media reports. That salary would be below the earnings of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. The Brazilian’s buyout clause has been fixed at an astronomical €200 million for the first year of the deal, €222 million for the second and will then increase to €250 million for the remaining three years.
Since his arrival from Santos, Neymar has built a fine record in Catalonia. He has scored scored 90 goals in 149 games and is in line to make his 150th appearance for the club in tonight’s Champions League game against Manchester City. He has won one Champions League title, two La Ligas, two Copa del Reys, one UEFA Super Cup, one Spanish Super Cup and one FIFA Club World Cup with Barcelona.
Recently both Sergio Busquets and Javier Maschereano extended their contracts at Barcelona.
