January 13 – José Mourinho and his team look to have received payments totalling more than £8 million from Chelsea after parting company with the West London club in December 2015 following a string of poor results.

The figure is disclosed in Chelsea accounts for the year to end-June 2016 now available at Companies House. The document alludes to “termination payments and compensation totalling £8.3 million (2015: £nil) in relation to the changes in the first team management during the year”. The high-profile Portuguese coach is now presiding over something of a revival at Manchester United, one of Chelsea’s chief Premier League rivals.

Chelsea announced just before Christmas that they had run up a big net loss of £70.6 million, due largely to the cost of early termination of its kit deal with Adidas in favour of an arrangement with Nike beginning this coming July. The accounts now reveal the precise level of the compensation fee as £67 million.

The new document also discloses that the club’s operating loss nearly doubled to £121.3 million, with a £49 million profit on player disposals – notably Ramires’s eye-catching sale to China – helping to restrict the pre-tax loss to £69.8 million.

A £28.5 million loss on cash flow hedges took the total comprehensive loss for the year to more than £99 million.

The club, which has just been granted planning permission to rebuild their Stamford Bridge stadium, boosted employee numbers by more than 100 compared with the previous year to 785. In spite of this, aggregate remuneration edged up by less than £7 million to £222.4 million.

Owner Roman Abramovich injected a further £43.3 million during the year, with £12.5 million of this converted to equity.
