January 18 – The English Football Association is considering introducing retrospective bans on players who dive or feign injury.
Officials are to visit Scotland where the practise is already used.
Currently in English football, players are only given retrospective bans for incidents of violent conduct. It is understood a rule change would require agreement from all football governing bodies in England.
Sean Dyche, manager of Premier league Burnley, believes that diving would be eradicated from football “in six months” with retrospective bans.
The move appears to have been prompted by a number of incidents in Premier League matches. Robert Snodgrass apologised for earning a penalty despite not being touched in Hull’s game versus against Crystal Palace, while Dele Alli won a debated spot-kick in Tottenham’s 5-0 win over Swansea.
Under current Football Association rules, players who dive can be cautioned for simulation but this can only occur during matches.
