May 21 – Venezuela won the opening match at the FIFA U20 World Cup in South Korea with a 2-0 victory over Germany. England got their campaign underway with a 3-0 win against Argentina.
The Venezuelans arrived in the Far East as underdogs, but have left their mark on the competition straightaway. Two quick-fire goals by Pena and Cordova in the second half proved too much for the Germans. In the other Group B encounter Mexico edged Vanuatu, World Cup debutants with 3-2.
England defeated rivals Argentina 3-0 with Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Adam Armstrong and Dominic Solanke scoring the goals. The win ended 20 years of hurt as England picked up their first victory at an U20 World Cup after 17 games without three points. Hosts South Korea breezed past Guinea 3-0
In a tight affair African champions Zanbia narrowly defeated Portugal 2-1. The Europeans showed good pedigree but were guilty of squandering plenty of chances before Helder struck late to seal three points for Zambia. Iran beat Costa Rica 1-0 to complete Group C’s matches.
South American champions Uruguay passed their first test with a 1-0 win against Italy. A fine free kick from substitute Rodrigo Amaral in the 76th minute proved to be the difference between the two sides. Japan defeated South Africa 2-1 in the other group game.
South Korea is hosting the 21st edition of the FIFA U20 World Cup, with the tournament ending on June 11 with the final in at the Suwon World Cup Stadium.
