February 16 – The Tackling Matchfixing conference, March 9/10 in Chelsea, London, has added three new speakers to its speaker line-up.
Simon Barker, Assistant Chief Executive at the PFA, member of both the Sports Betting Group and Sports Betting Integrity Forum, Steven Flynn, a sports/criminal barrister from St Johns Buildings, Manchester, and Lorraine Pearman from the Gambling Commission, and the Betting Integrity Programme Lead will join the panel Mark Hovell, Partner at Mills & Reeve LLP, Manchester and a CAS Arbitrator.
Titled ‘Matchfixing – the criminal aspects’, the panel will examine the closest disciplinary issue to criminal law that sports bodies are facing (closer than doping). Discussion will cover match-fixing from the criminal and Criminal Law point of view and how the criminal authorities, including Criminal state courts and law enforcement agencies as well as betting agencies and gambling authorities see the relations between them and the sport organisations.
At the centre of the issues are ultimately the powers the governing bodies have to act on matchfixing instances and protect themselves from criminal activity.
