April 24 – The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has committed to the Sports law at the Crossroads conference, May 10-11 in Madrid, as a supporting sponsor.
The conference will hear leading opinion on the new transfer system reform package, as well as debate the new legal challenges of esports.
The recent amendments to the FIFA Regulations on the Status and Transfer of Players are the core structure of a series of reforms of the transfer rules and will have a global impact on the transfer market.
The Sports Law at the Crossroads conference will include a presentation on Just Cause, termination due to outstanding salaries and consequences of termination without just cause. Session topics will also look at the restrictions on contractual freedom, execution of monetary decisions, and the new powers that FIFA’s Dispute Resolution Chamber.
AFC general secretary Dato Windsor John, said: “These are important rule changes within FIFA and it is important that their implications are fully understood.
“There is a common misconception that the new rules only apply or are of relevance to Europe but that isn’t the case. They are about the protection of players and the sport and they affect all of us. In Asia we are seeing a lot more interest in our players, there is a huge amount of player movement and internationalisation and increasingly so. This is also seeing a new money flow within the game.
“We are very much stakeholders in all of this change and have an important voice. In January we held our first 24-team Asian Cup which was a major step forward for our nations and a showcase for their players. We have seen player movement from that tournament and not just within Asia.
“The speaker line-up and the delegate interest from Asia shows we are very much of the dialogue.”
Hosted at the Madrid Bar Association, the conference will be opened by Luis Rubiales, President of the Spanish federation (RFEF). Rubiales was formerly president of Spanish players union AFE, before being elected president of the RFEF in 2018.
Also speaking is FIFA’s chief legal officer Emilio Garcia Silvero and former CAS Deputy General Secretary William Sternheimer. Garcia Silvero will be joined by FIFA colleagues
Omar Ongaro, Football Regulatory Director at FIFA.
They will join sessions that will contrast the regulatory position against the viewpoints of the players unions via Roy Vermeer, Legal Counsel at FIFPro, and the clubs through ECA General Counsel Jose Luiz Andrade.
