September 11 – The troubled UK TV deal for LaLiga’s live broadcast rights has now found a multi-platform solution with Premier Sports in a deal that will see live matches on Premier Sports 1 and 2, as well as LaLigaTV as a standalone channel as part of the Premier Sports package.
Two seasons ago was a Sky property but when Sky didn’t renew the rights LaLiga struggled to find a buyer at the right price ending up with a predominantly Eleven Sports deal that the broadcaster pulled out of viewing figures in the UK didn’t match expectations.
Now LaLiga has pulled off a deal with Premier Sport that will see it as a cornerstone of the cable and satellite broadcaster’s output, with every game broadcast in the UK and Ireland to the end of the 2021/22 season.
LaLiga becomes the first of Europe’s football league to have a 24/7 dedicated channel in the UK and Ireland.
LaLigaTV will be part of the Premier Sports channel bundle on Sky TV and the Premier Player OTT streaming service for £11.99 per month or £99 per year. LaLigaTV can also be bought as a standalone service via Premier Sports, priced at £5.99 per month or £49 per year.
Premier Sports’ free-to-air channel FreeSports will also broadcast match content as well as the weekly LaLiga Highlights Show.
Javier Tebas, LaLiga’s president, said: “Through our long-term partnership with Premier Sports, we’re happy to give fans of Spanish football a chance to enjoy LaLiga’s world-class content in a variety of formats, including via OTT and Premier Sports’ linear TV offering, as well as our own dedicated English-language channel, LaLigaTV. We trust that football fans across both these territories will enjoy unprecedented access to the best league in the world.”
LaLigaTV will launch on the Premier Player OTT service next month and will be available on the Sky TV platform by January 2020.
Premier Sports’ live football line-up includes Serie A, Scottish Cup football, MLS, and Eredivisie.
Richard Sweeney, CEO of Premier Sports said: “We are thrilled to be announcing this truly unique and game-changing agreement with LaLiga that signals the beginning of an exciting new chapter for Spanish football in the UK.
