Wolves change esports gear with Gulf Racing hook-up for Le Mans Virtual

June 2 – Premier Peague Wolverhampton Wanderers have accelerated their eSports activity via a partnership with Gulf Racing for the 24 hours of Le Mans Virtual.

Wolves are already active in eSports, competing in FIFA 20, PUBG, Kart Racing and Identity V. The deal with Gulf Racing’s Porsche 911 RSR GTE car will see it kitted out in old gold and black Wolves branding.

The team will be called GR Wolves Racing and the driver line-up will be unveiled later this week.

The 24 Hours of Le Mans dates back to 1923. The virtual Le Mann will race June 13-14 with the traditional race now rescheduled for this September.

The 24 Hours of Le Mans Virtual will see teams made up of a combination of professional racing drivers and eSports champions. The race broadcast live on television and online across the globe.

There are 50 teams contesting the race with a number of F1 stars taking part, including McLaren’s Lando Norris, Red Bull Racing’s Max Verstappen and former world champions Jenson Button and Fernando Alonso.

Russell Jones, Wolves’ general manager for marketing and commercial growth, said: “This is a great opportunity for Wolves to enter the world of motor sports and extend our eSports portfolio.

“This partnership provides us with an opportunity to reach a brand-new audience and align the Wolves brand with one of the most iconic motor competitions in the world.”

The move into esports is a new step for Gulf Racing which started in 2011 working with McLaren, Lamborghini, Aston Martin and more recently Porsche, competing in European and international endurance races and championships.

Mike Wainwright, owner of Gulf Racing said: “Gulf Racing are a technical Racing team so it was important to find a partner that could help us navigate a new world of eSports.

“Wolves have made great strides in this area and we look forward to sharing our skills on this exciting venture.”
