October 9 – With Spain and Portugal having confirmed their joint bid to host the 2030 World Cup, their two top leagues have similarly renewed their vows, extending a cooperation agreement signed in 2017 for a further three years.
The LaLiga and Liga Portugal MoU was established to increase knowledge sharing between the two leagues as well as organise the Iberian Cup tournament. It is being extended to “explore new fields of collaboration in the field of eSports”, as well as cooperate in the fight against audio-visual piracy, racism and xenophobia. The two leagues say they will also cooperate on grassroots programmes.
More importantly the agreement “reinforces support for the Spain-Portugal candidacy for the 2030 Football World Cup,” said LaLiga.
“We are very satisfied to have signed the agreement with the Portuguese league for three more years. For LaLiga it represents a significant boost in the bid for the 2030 World Cup in Spain and Portugal. We believe that the efforts of both leagues will also help us to achieve this success,” said LaLiga president, Javier Tebas (pictured right).
Pedro Proença (pictured left), Liga Portugal president, emphasised the benefits to the Portuguese league of the MoU to date, and specifically the importance of the joint 2030 World Cup bid to both countries.
“We are pleased to renew our strategic agreement with LaLiga in order to strengthen our relationship and learning together. For Portuguese football this agreement has been very positive. It allows us to continue working together and also in relation to the candidacy for the 2030 World Cup, which will be important for both countries,” said Proença.
