February 1 – Portugal’s Primeira Liga is to centralise its domestic broadcast rights from 2027/28, forming a company with the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) to sell media rights.
Currently clubs sell their own home rights with sports broadcaster Sport TV holding 17 clubs. Benfica stream their matches themselves.
“The sustainability and development of national football as a whole are closely linked to this negotiation. It seems to us that this is a sign of the irrevocable will of the FPF and the league to complete this process and work together to come up with better solutions for national football,” said FPF president Fernando Gomes.
While the Portuguese have taken a step towards centralised sales via a joint-owned company, Italy’s Serie A is on the next stage of their own domestic sales agreement as they target €1.15 billion a year for the 2021-24 rights cycle.
Serie A goes to next TV stage
Sky, DAZN, Mediapro and Discovery are reported to have made bids while Amazon have been ruled out by Serie A after making an offer for a limited package similar to the deal it has with the Premier League.
None of the offers to date have reached the figure Serie A are looking for (an increase of 18% on the last deal) but Serie A chief executive Luigi De Siervo told Italian media: “”I think there is room to improve the offers, they were not so bad as some could expect given the situation with the coronavirus pandemic.”
