February 4 – Electronic Arts (EA) has renewed is exclusive license with UEFA for its Champions League and Europa League video games, keeping both competitions on the FIFA platform.
UEFA and EA Sports first partnered in 2018, winning the license over Konami and its Pro Evolution Soccer (PES) game.
A new eChampions League tournament began in March 2019 with a knockout competition and culminated with a final in Madrid in May, the day before the Champions League final.
EA says it will expand the FIFA franchise with six mobile games, “ranging from authentic simulation to unique arcade formats offering new ways to play for everyone.” It is also launching FIFA Online 4, a free-to-play PC version of FIFA, in 15 new countries.
EA described the renewal as multi-year. UEFA usually works on a three-year cycle for its licensing and commercial rights.
“Our vision is to create the most authentic, social and connected football experience by bringing our games to more devices, more countries and more fans around the world,” said DJ Jackson, VP, EA SPORTS Brand.
EA Sports will also launch on Google’s Stadia service for the first time on March 17 with the FIFA 21 title.
The FIFA 21 version was the best-selling game in the UK in 2020. Worldwide the game has sold more than 325 million units since launch. It is now in its 28th iteration.
