LaLigaTV breaks new ground in UK with Amazon Prime channel deal

February 12 – LaLiga has added its 24/7 English-language tv channel to the Amazon platform as one of the Prime Video Channels in the UK only.

LaLigaTV already broadcasts into the UK as a standalone channel in a deal with Premier Sports which also shows the channel via Sky, Virgin and Freesports. The Amazon deal will not change that arrangement.

It is the first football league to agree a channel deal with Amazon and the first time Prime Video Channels will show an overseas football league in the UK. LaLigaTV will be joining Prime Video Channels’ line-up of over 70 channels in the UK, including live and on demand entertainment and sport.

The distribution agreement lasts until the end of the 2021/22. Amazon subscribers can buy the channel for an add-on £6.99 per month that will include all available live matches, more than 25 hours of weekly live studio programming and exclusive new interviews. All content will be made available live and on-demand for subscribers.

LaLiga President Javier Tebas said: “We are excited to be growing our UK presence with Amazon Prime Video, which has quickly become an important name in the world of sport. The UK has a deep love of football and a huge demand for premium live content, which is reflected by the range of broadcast options we are making available to fans.”

Amazon in the UK has a Premier League rights package that sees it air selected games. On launch it was announced as the most effective subscription drive Amazon had made in the UK.

Julian Monaghan, Director of Amazon Prime Video Channels EU. “LaLigaTV is a great addition to our growing stable of live sport and sports docuseries available on Prime Video and Prime Video Channels, giving customers even more selection to find the sports they’re passionate about.”

For LaLiga it is about driving the Spanish brand and its clubs via more availability in a major football market. It is positioning itself directly alongside the Premier League in the Amazon platform.

Melcior Soler, director of LaLiga’s audiovisual department, said: “Increasing the visibility of LaLigaTV has been a key objective in recent years and we are delighted with the progress that has been made in the UK, in partnership with Premier Sports. Distribution through Amazon Prime Video Channels is a positive new step that broadens our reach even further.”
