June 8 – In a potentially significant twist to the European Super League fallout, Spanish media are reporting that the Swiss Ministry of Justice has barred both UEFA and FIFA – which are based in Switzerland – from taking premature sanctions against the aborted league’s remaining founder members.
Few details have emerged but if true, the news would represent a welcome boost for Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus – the three rebels who are still holding out in their attempt to keep the project alive despite all other 12 original ESL members pulling out.
UEFA have opened disciplinary proceedings against the trio with the possibility they could be banned from the Champions League.
But Spanish broadcasters claim Swiss authorities have sent an official notification to both UEFA and FIFA stating they cannot legally penalise the clubs.
Although it is not clear what the rationale is, the reports claim FIFA and UEFA have been mandated to await the outcome of the European Court of Justice’s ruling on whether they are adopting an unfair monopoly in blocking the breakaway competition before applying any sanctions.
