CVC fund-raising completed, LaLiga secures €4.95bn domestic TV deal

December 14 – La Liga has sold its domestic broadcast rights to Movistar, DAZN for €4.95 billion for five seasons, the league said in a statement.

The deal represents a slight uptick in value, with La Liga banking €10 million more per season than in the previous agreement. In 2018, the Spanish league and Telefonica teamed up in a three-season deal worth €2.940 billion.

DAZN has picked up 175 matches per season while Telefonica-owned Movistar has the rights to the other 205 games. “The award of these LaLiga rights represents a strategic local investment for us in a key market, and is all part of the global momentum that we are driving across our business, which continues at pace,” said co-CEO of DAZN Group James Rushton.

“This is further proof that we are well past the tipping point in the migration of fans from viewing sports on linear pay TV, to streaming services.”

The league is still to sell live free-to-air rights, the packages to show games in bars, hotels and airports, as well as for the second division for the 2022-2027 cycle.

The new deal will welcome news to Spanish clubs, who have struggled during the global health crisis, and comes on top of the recent La Liga – CVC agreement that will see an investment of €1.994 billion in the league in return for a CVC stake in a company that will commercialize the broadcasting and sponsorship rights.

The clubs approved the CVC investment, but four, including Real Madrid and FC Barcelona, opted out.
