January 31 – Starlizard Integrity Services (SIS) has reported that the number of football matches it assessed as being suspicious in 2021 is 130, 0.30% of all matches played in 2021 that the firm analysed.
The numbers come from Starlizard’s recently launched Integrity Knowledge Hub which makes publicly available detail on the extent of match-fixing in football.
SIS, which monitors suspicious betting patterns in football, analysed 43,749 football matches in 2021.
Of the 130 matches identified as suspicious, 95 (73%) took place in what Starlizard classifies as the lowest three betting tiers (tiers 6, 7 and 8).
Starlizard has loaded up four years of its data from domestic leagues to international friendlies. It also provides its own five-point Suspicion Rating scale to give an indication of how suspicious SIS assess these matches to be.
What is perhaps most startling about the data is the scale of match-fixing worldwide.
Over the period of January 2017 to December 2021, 1,350 matches were assessed as being suspicious – 0.58% of all matches analysed.
Of these matches, 476 were in top flight leagues, while 101 were suspicious friendlies.
The Knowledge Hub is accessible via an interactive dashboard and gives insights into suspected match-fixing. The data is interactive enabling users to search and create their own datasets to get to the information they want.
