April 26 – English football’s foot-dragging made the imposition of a regulator to oversee finances and club ownership inevitable, according to the government.
On Monday plans were laid out to radically reform the governance of the English game following a series of questionable takeovers.
Sports Minister Nigel Huddleston (pictured) on Monday formally confirmed the government’s support saying many supporters had “felt alienated from their own clubs”.
Huddleston said he had expected the football authorities to act sooner in terms of equality, diversity and inclusion.
But they “ran out of time” to solve the sport’s issues, prompting the government to intervene with “big, drastic” moves.
“We’ve run out of time to let football sort this out themselves,” Huddleston told the BBC. “We’ve heard that again and again and we’ve been disappointed.
“The Premier League is an incredible success story. We want it to continue to be incredibly successful but we want the rest of the pyramid to be sustainable as well. The Premier League has a role in that.”
