Skip Marley’s ‘Lions’ sets the mood for the W Championship kick-off

July 4 – Skip Marley has released the official anthem ‘Lions’ for the 2022 Concacaf W Championship from July 4-18th, and will be in Monterrey to perform it before the final at Estadio BBVA on July 18.

Skip Marley is the grandson of reggae legend Bob Marley and son of Cedella Marley who is famous in the football world for her support of Jamaica’s Reggae Girlz after the team were given limited funding before the 2019 World Cup in France, the first time a Caribbean team had qualified for a World Cup.

Cedella performs on the anthem which encourage this generation of women to use their individual strengths to become a collective voice of inspiration, change and empowerment in today’s world – very much Cedella’s message through her support and encouragement of the Jamaican women.

“We were honored when Concacaf approached us to re-work my song Lions. This song and the message of collective strength and resolve is fitting when we think of women on and off the pitch. The
women competing in this tournament are inspirational and we hope Lions connects with
them, their fans and the next generation!” said Skip and Cedella Marley.

The Jamaican men and women’s teams are famous for their celebration of Reggae music and the inspiration of Bob Marley. Skip Marley is forging his own reputation in the music business. His single Slow Dow was the fastest selling single in the Marley family history, now standing at more than 200 million streams. He is the first Jamaican born artist to reach the number 1 spot on the R&B charts.

Concacaf said the song is part of its effort to engage fans “in authentic and innovative ways as the organisation is steadfast in its commitment to growing women’s football”.

“Hosting the Concacaf W Championship goes beyond the competitions on the field – it’s a celebration of women and girls’ football at all levels across Concacaf. The song embodies that collective power and will strike a chord with fans as they enjoy this exciting competition!” Concacaf Chief Commercial Officer Heidi Pellerano said.
