April 11 – The countdown for the Women’s World Cup is on. On Tuesday, Australia and New Zealand marked 100 days until the kick-off of the women’s flagship tournament and the Football Ferns taking on Norway in the curtain raiser.
To mark the milestone, the ‘Unity Beat’ – a tournament chant of symbolic nature – was unveiled and the last-minute sales phase for the finals got underway.
“When the Unity Beat plays in each of the tournament’s nine welcoming host cities, fans from all over the world will know that it’s time to join in and create a truly unforgettable atmosphere,” said FIFA Secretary General Fatma Samoura.
“From the streets to the stadiums, the Unity Beat will be a call to action for supporters to unite and remember the one thing that has brought them all together – football.”
Tickets remain available for the majority of matches. On Tuesday, FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia chief operating officer Dave Beeche (pictured) revealed that approximately 650,000 tickets have been sold following the first two sales phases. In the final phase, about 800,000 tickets will be on offer.
For international fans, all of Australia’s group matches and China vs England in Adelaide as well as both semi-finals and final are sold out.
The tournament will feature 32 finalists for the first time after FIFA expanded the format to capitalise on the success of the 2019 World Cup in France. The tournament kicks off on July 20 with New Zealand hosting Norway and Australia playing Ireland. The final takes place a month later.
It will be the biggest sporting event Australia has hosted since the Olympic Games in Sydney in 2000.
