April 24 – Jorge Salomon has been re-elected as president of the Federación Nacional Autónoma de Fútbol de Honduras (Fenafuth) for a four-year term.
“Honduran football is in good hands and with honest, serious people who want the best,” said Salomon (pictured).
“I take the position with great responsibility and with that conviction, we are moving forward. The plan is to support all national football, from the youth level to coaches, referees, women and the pro level. We are going to work to promote football and to keep it at the best levels with this work team that we have, plus those who support us at the national team level and other committees, we are moving forward.”
Salomon came to power in 2019 and will serve another term until 2027. A Gianni Infantino loyalist, he took the stage at the 72nd FIFA Congress to push back against the speech of Norwegian Football Federation (NFF) president Lise Klaveness, arguing that “it is not the place to discuss such issues.”
Back home, Salomon has promised Honduras will be competitive in the qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup when the region will stage the tournament to be played for the first time in a 48-team format.
Honduran football has struggled in recent years having qualified for both the 2010 and 2014 World Cups. At the draw for the Gold Cup in Los Angeles a week ago, the Hondurans were only ranked in the third seeded group.
They ended uo being draw in the ‘group of death’ with Mexico, Haiti and guest nation Qatar.
“Football is at a quality level and we have grown in everything, we hope we can have the joy of being in the 2026 World Cup, and for that, we ask for unity, little by little we are advancing, work needs to be done. We have qualified for the Gold Cup, that was the goal, we must go compete and work hard. We trust to bounce back and have a successful team. United all in one force,” said Salomon.
However, Honduran fans are becoming increasingly impatient with their team and federation management and are demanding a return at least to the upper echelons of Concacaf competition.
