What to expect
Trinidad and Tobago qualified for the group stage directly but only after Nicaragua were banned for fielding an illegible player. The team does not have the star players of the past or is anything like the team that qualified for the 1998 World Cup, but it is rebuilding, slowly, under a Normalisation Committee. Its leagues have restarted and although there is little funding for the players, they are at least playing again. Drawn with US, Jamaica and St Kitts and Nevis, Trinidad see St Kitts as a must-win game but will have their work cut out against the US and Jamaica.
Star players
They do not have the star names of the past like Dwight Yorke or Kenwyne Jones but in in goalkeeper Marvin Phillip, defender Aubrey David, and midfielder Joevin Jones they do have experience. Levi Garcia is an emerging player to watch.
Coach
Angus Eve is a Trinidadian former professional and the head coach of since 2021. With 117 caps, he is Trinidad & Tobago’s most capped player of all time. He takes charge for a second Gold Cup after leading the team to a third-place finish in the group stage two years ago. He was a player in their run to the semi-finals in 2000
