What to expect
Costa Rica, playing in their 16th Concacaf Gold Cup, are in a battle not just for the Gold Cup but for bragging rights in South America. Having led the way in the region they are now challenged by Panama who beat them to qualify for the Nations League finals. Once again they are in a group with Panama and the winner of this match looks likely to be the group winner. A team that for a long time relied on the brilliance of veterans Bryan Ruiz and Celso Borges, is trying to build a future without them. They still have a lot of work to do and players of that calibre to find.
Star players
Celso Borges returns yet again for Costa Rica. He is their all-time Gold Cup top scorer five goals, as well as all-time appearances leader in the tournament, with 25 games. He will be supported by other veteran performers including Kendall Waston, Francisco Calvo, and Joel Campbell. But they can’t win it on their own and will be looking for young forward Anthony Contreras to step up and start fulfilling his potential.
Coach
Luis Fernando Suarez took Costa Rica to the quarterfinals in 2021. The Colombian coach previously coached Honduras to consecutive semi-final appearances in the 2011 and 2013 editions.
