What to expect
Jamaica come into the Gold Cup on a mission. They have twice made the Gold Cup final in 2015 and 2017. In 2015 they beat the US to get there, and in 2017 they beat Mexico. They are in a group with the US, Trinidad and Tobago and St Kitts and Nevis. With their Premier League looking forward line they will expect to qualify from the group. If that frontline start to find the back of the net then they could go all the way. Trinidad and Tobago, their long time Caribbean rivals, are no longer the force they used to be, while St Kitts and Nevis do not look to have the fire power to cope with the Reggae Boyz.
Star Players
Undoubtedly the all-Premier League line-up of Michail Antonio, Leon Bailey, Bobby Reid and newcomer Demarai Gray has the ability to light up the Gold Cup. Shamar Nicholson, who plays his club football in Russia, is a strong follow up from the bench. In goal Jamaica has one of the best keepers in the tournament in Andre Blake.
Manager
Icelander Heimir Hallgrimsson is in his first Gold Cup having only taken the Jamaican job in 2022. A player in Iceland he also began his coaching career there, working from assistant manager of the national team from 2011-13, and then taking on the full managerial role until 2018. From 2018-2021 he coached at Al-Arabi in Qatar before moving to Jamaica. He has quickly brought more organisation to a team that in the past could be criticised for a lack of focus. Hallgrimsson replaced Paul Hall as head coach on Sept. 22, 2022.
