May 24 – In Brazil leading clubs are pushing to take control of all their media and commercial rights with the construction of a new league entity. In Chile, the desire for new and increased funding is similar though the professional league is following more of a European model.
Chile’s Asociación Nacional de Fútbol Profesional (ANFP) has made available 20% of a company controlling the commercial rights to the country’s top two football divisions – 16 teams in each division – according to Bloomberg.
The newly-created company will hold television, naming, sponsorship and licensing rights. ANFP says it is targeting an investor who can drive new revenue streams with a focus on technology innovation.
In Europe both Spain’s LaLiga and France’s Ligue1 have raised private equity money from offering stakes in their media rights, and the Bundesliga was progressed along the same lines before discussions were derailed this week after clubs failed to agree a way forward.
Chile did not qualify for the Qatar 2022 World Cup but has won the Copa América in 2015 and 2016.
