Hudson quits US manager’s role with Nations League and Gold Cup just two weeks away

May 31 – Anthony Hudson has suddenly quit as interim head coach of the USA men’s national side, just two weeks before he was to lead them in the CONCACAF Nations League semi-finals.

Hudson’s departure was announced less than a week after the US Soccer Federation said he would remain in charge for at least five more games.

Hudson, who helped secure the recruitment of several dual-nationality players, has been the interim head coach since January 4 following the expiration of coach Gregg Berhalter’s contract. He is being replaced by B.J. Callaghan, another former member of Berhalter’s staff.

The search for a new full-time head coach to lead the country into the 2026 World Cup continues.

“B.J. has been an integral part of the USMNT staff during the last four years as this young team has grown and developed,” said Matt Crocker, who is leaving relegated English Premier League Southampton to become the US Soccer Federation’s sporting director on August 2.

“Working alongside Anthony Hudson these last five months, we are confident he is prepared and ready to lead this group in the summer tournaments. We are grateful to Anthony for the tremendous job he did and wish him success in the future.”

The USSF said Hudson was taking a job with a club but did not identify the team or the role.

Hudson’s five games were the fewest for any US coach since John Kowalski led the team against Canada and Mexico in March 1991 between the roles of Bob Gansler and Bora Milutinovic.
