June 27 – Japan took the final slot in the AFC U17 Asian Cup semi-finals in Thailand, beating Australia 3-1 in their last eight tie at the Pathum Thani Stadium.

Japan, who are three-time AFC U-16 Championship winners, will now meet Iran in the semi-finals on Thursday.

Uzbekistan struck late in their quarter final match to defeat Saudi Arabia 2-0. They will now face South Korea in the semi-final.

The four semi-finalists – Japan, Iran, Uzbekistan and South Korea – will be the AFC representatives at the U17 World Cup Indonesia 2023, along with the hosts.

The 2023 U-17 World Cup will be played from 10 November to 2 December and is the 19th edition of the biennial championship. This will be the first time that Indonesia has hosted a FIFA Tournament and will be the first time that the FIFA U17 World Cup has been held in Southeast Asia. It will also be the first time a FIFA Tournament will be held in the region since the 2012 Futsal World Cup in Thailand.

Japan, hunting a fourth title, and South Korea go into the semi-finals of the AFC’s U17 Asian Cup as favourites.
