July 4 – The 2030 World Cup bid candidature of Portugal, Spain, Morocco and Ukraine held a special session on Monday with sustainability being the key agenda item.
The development of a sustainability strategy has been earmarked as a key pillar of the joint bid and will see the COE (Spanish National Olympic Committee) drafted in to play a special role in the collaboration.
The COE will not only play an important role in the bid but, as a result of its world leading approach to major event sustainability, will take the lead with technical support in the sustainability aspects on the joint bid is successful.
Present at the meeting at the RFEF (Royal Spanish Football Federations) headquarters were COE president Alejandro Blanco as well as members of the Consejo Superior de Deportes (CSD),the Portuguese Sports Secretariat, and the four national federations.
The meeting is the next stage of an agreement last September between RFEF president Luis Rubiales and Alejandro Blanco – the Spanish federation being the first to implement the next stage of the agreement to work for environmental and human sustainability in sport.
“It is not just a matter of complying with FIFA’s requirements and criteria, according to both Spanish organisations: the aim is to go beyond what is required, to create a sustainable football model that will mark a before and after in the World Championships and other sporting events at the highest international level,” said the bid nations.
