July 5 – The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has set up an AFC Elite Video Match Officials Panel to evaluate Video Match Officials (VMOs) prior to appointment to major competitions.
The AFC said the objective was to create a more “stringent and precise process” of VMO assessment in line with the AFC’s Referees Committee “commitment to ensure the world-class standards of Asian refereeing”.
The AFC has changed the season dates for its club competition from a calendar year to follow the European calendar that runs over the year end. The new initiative is for the period 2023-2027.
The Referees Committee highlighted an increased pool of match officials coupled with an increased presence of Asian match officials on the international stage. AFC match officials have been appointed to the final of the FIFA Club World Cup Morocco 2022, the U17 Women’s World Cup India 2022 as well as the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 Third Place Play-off match.
Key to the increased number qualified match officials has been the AFC’s refereeing development programmes which have included 107 online coaching session for the AFC’s MAs since introduction in 2022.
The new AFC Elite Video Match Officials Panel is another step within the number of programmes the runs, including the AFC Referee Academy, the AFC Refereeing STAR Programme, the AFC MA Refereeing Administration Project and numerous courses and seminars.
