July 13 – The AFC has marked the six-months to go date before the start of the AFC Asian Cup Qatar 2023, inviting fans to vote for their all-time AFC Asian Cup Dream XI.
Fans can vote via the AFC’s new mobile app or on the website. The fan whose squad matches the final selected Dream XI will win a trip to the opening match of the Asian Cup Qatar 2023 between defending champions Qatar and Lebanon.
The Asian Cup was originally due to be hosted in China in 2022, but with the travel issues around the pandemic and China’s covid isolation policies, the Chinese pulled out of hosting. The AFC retendered the right to host at short notice with Qatar winning the bid but moving the event to January 2023.
The last Asian Cup in 2019 was a breakthrough championship for the AFC, with its expansion to 24 teams and hosting in the UAE that saw it break all its previous attendance and viewing records, as well as set new benchmarks for fan engagement.
It feels it has been a long wait for the next edition in Qatar which will be the 17th edition covering nearly 67 years of the championship.
Fans have until July 30 to pick their all-time Asian Cup dream team from stars such as Korea Republic and Tottenham Hotspur forward Son Heung-min and two-time AFC Asian CupT winner and Saudi Arabia’s all-time leading goal scorer Majed Abdullah.
The final squad will be selected based on fan votes as well as input from a panel of experts. The final #AsianCupDreamXI squad will be announced on August 12, five months ahead of the competition.
The Asian Cup kicks off in Qatar on 12 January 12 and runs through to the final on February 10. Qatar are the current holders having been surprise winners in 2019.
