August 6 – The second edition of the U20 Intercontinental Cup between the club champions of Conmebol and UEFA will be played in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on September 9.
Copa Libertadores U20 winners Boca Juniors will meet 2023 UEFA Youth League champions AZ Alkmaar from the Netherlands.
The first edition of the intercontinental match up was won 1-0 by Portugal’s Benfica in August 2022 with the goal coming from substitute Luís Semedo against Uruguayan side Peñarol in Montevideo.
UEFA said the venue and broadcast details for the Buenos Aires match-up are still to be finalised.
The series of Conmebol vs UEFA match-ups began following a long term co-operation agreement between the two confederations that has seen shared office space opened in London and the first match between the national men’s team champions of the two confederations – Italy and Argentian – in June 2022 at a sold-out Wembley Stadium in London. Argentina won 3-0.
Following the success of that match, the co-operation was expanded to a series of new events involving women’s football, futsal and youth teams from the two confederations.
England beat Brazil at Wembley in July on penalties in the first women’s Finalissima after the game ended 1-1 in normal time.
The co-operation between the two confederations includes a continuation of an exchange of referees for a number of competitions and referees’ courses as well as working on the mutual recognition of coaching qualifications with the aim of this coming into effect in the course of 2023.
