September 22 – Less than two weeks after Hansi Flick’s departure, Germany have appointed Julian Nagelsmann as new manager to lead the national team until the European Championship on home soil.
The 36-year-old will lead Germany at Euro 2024 with the task of delivering a respectable performance following a string of disappointing results.
“We have a European Championships in our country. That is something special — something that only comes around every few decades,” said Nagelsmann in a statement. “Having a great tournament in a great country comes above everything. I have a great desire to take on this challenge. The performance in Dortmund was the beginning. We will be a united bunch in the coming year.”
Nagelsmann last managed Bayern Munich, where he won the Bundesliga in his first full season, but was sacked in March of this year after a run of poor results. At Bayern, he had succeeded Flick and he will now do the same at the national team. Flick was dismissed following a 4-1 defeat in a friendly against Japan earlier this month.
DFB president Bernd Neuendorf said: “Next year’s European Championship is of enormous importance for football in Germany as a whole. We are convinced that Julian Nagelsmann, as national coach, will ensure that the national team inspires its fans and that the Euros is also a sporting success.
Julian Nagelsmann is an outstanding coach who approaches his new task with the highest level of motivation. We will all now focus on the tournament next summer and support Julian Nagelsmann as best we can.”
Germany’s recent record in major tournaments has been abysmal with first-round exits in the last two World Cups. At Euro 2020, they were eliminated by England in the round of sixteen. The Germans last won the European championship in 1996.
