Morocco hire Spain’s World Cup winning Jorge Vilda for women’s team

October 13 – Jorge Vilda, who led Spain to the Women’s World Cup title before being fired weeks later, has quickly found work again after being appointed coach of Morocco’s women’s national team.

He succeeds Frenchman Reynald Pedros, who took Morocco to the World Cup knockout stage on their tournament debut.

Vilda was sacked in the wake of the Luis Rubiales kiss scandal despite leading Spain to their maiden women’s World Cup.

Several players who were not selected by Vilda had gone on strike before the tournament over his training methods and tactics. Those who won the World Cup said they would not play international football again until he left.

Vilda was seen as an ally of Rubiales, the disgraced former Spanish FA president who was accused by public prosecutors of sexual assault and coercion for giving Jenni Hermoso an unsolicited kiss on the lips during the post-World Cup final awards ceremony.

Vilda was among those accused of trying to convince Hermoso to back Rubiales after the kiss but denied wrongdoing.
