Free travel for Euro 2024 ticket holders

October 20 – UEFA has announced that Euro 2024 ticket holders will enjoy free public transport in German host cities during a 36-hour time window around matches.

In a statement, the European Confederation wrote that, “UEFA has signed an agreement with the association of the German transport companies VDV (Verband Deutscher Verkehrsunternehmen) for a 36-hour travel pass (36-Stunden-Fahrkarte) available to fans with match tickets at the final tournament, which will be played across ten host cities in Germany from 14 June to 14 July 2024.”

“Depending on the host city, the VDV expects around 70% of stadium attendees to use public transport when travelling to and from the stadium.”

UEFA emphasised that this will allow for travel in a sustainable and climate-friendly way. Euro 2024 will once again represent more compact finals after the pan-European, Covid-19-hit edition of 2020. It is not the first time UEFA has introduced free public transport in host cities, a similar offer was available in 4 cities during Euro 2020 (Glasgow, Saint Petersburg, Copenhagen, Bucharest).

Euro 2024 will feature ten host cities with four of those in the Ruhr region. Berlin will stage the final with Munich getting the opening match. Earlier this month, organisers opened the first ticketing sales phase. The draw for the final tournament will take place on December 2 in Hamburg.

However, the next two European Championships will return to co-host formulas that shift away from climate concerns. In 2028, the United Kingdom and Ireland will stage the finals and four years later Italy and Turkey will share hosting duties.
