Put takes over at Uganda while Frank in at Rwanda as 2026 qualifiers loom

November 2 – Belgian Paul Put has been appointed as the new coach of Uganda, replacing Serbian Micho Sredojevic who was sacked in September. Germany’s Torsten Frank will take charge of neighbouring Rwanda.

Put (pictured) has previously managed a number of African clubs as well as Kenya, Gambia, Congo and Burkina Faso. He led The Stallions to the final of the 2012 African Cup of Nations.

“FUFA rolled out an application process and we got over 150 coaches including two Ugandans who applied for the job. After thorough analysis, the FUFA Executive zeroed down on Mr. Put Paul Joseph who we believe will do a good job,” said the president of the Ugandan FA (FUFA) Moses Magogo.

“I have been following the Uganda Cranes especially the recent AFCON Qualifier match against Niger and the two friendly games against Mali and Zambia,” explained Put. “Give me time, give me the confidence. You will see a different national team.”

Put will debut with The Cranes against Guinea and Somalia in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers in November, but the Belgian remains a controversial figure. In 2019, Guinea banned Put for life because of corruption. In his native Belgium, he was banned because of his involvement in match-fixing.

In neighbouring Rwanda, Torsten Frank will take the reigns of the national team and succeed Carlos Alós Ferrer. The German has coached Nepal and Bhutan and also served as technical director of Mozambique and Sierra Leone. In November the Amavubi will face Zimbabwe and South Africa in World Cup qualifying.
