November 20 – Copa America 2024, to be played in the US next summer, will open in the 71,000-capacity Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta and close in 65,300-capacity Hard Rock Stadium in Miami.
Played June 20 to July 14, the 16-team tournament will see Conmebol’s 10 nations joined by six from Concacaf.
This will be the second time the Copa America has been played in the US, the last time being the centennial edition in 2016 which was won by Chile.
Current champions Argentina who beat Brazil in the final in the Maracana 1-0 in 2021, will be hoping to go all the way to the final again in Miami, Lionel Messi’s new home, and where the national association is opening a national team academy and training base.
“We expect stadiums filled with the passion of the entire American continent for the inauguration and final of an unforgettable Conmebol Copa America. In Atlanta, the ball will start rolling and it won’t stop for a month until the final match in Miami. These are magnificent stadiums in wonderful cities,” said Alejandro Domínguez – President of Conmebol.
The hosting of the Copa America in the US is the start of three major world tournaments coming to the US, with the first edition of the 32-team Club World Cup being hosted there in 2025 and the World Cup being co-hosted with Canada and Mexico in 2027.
“The exciting prospect of co-organizing the Copa America 2024 with our partners at Conmebol, in addition to the range of Concacaf competitions we will deliver in the next three years, will cement our region as a global hub for football as we head towards the FIFA World Cup 2026,” said Concacaf president Victor Montagliani.
Concacaf’s six teams will qualify through the 2023/24 Concacaf Nations League that is currently at the second leg of the quarter final stage this week. The four semi-finalists will qualify automatically while the two remaining spots will be decided by a play-in match between the losing quarterfinalists. The play-in match will be played in March 2024.
