December 11 – Are unheralded Girona now genuine La Liga contenders to end the domination of Real Madrid and Barcelona?
That’s the question being asked across Spain after they stunned Barca 4-2 at the Nou Camp at the weekend to move to the top of the table.
The statement win sent Girona two points above Real, who drew 1-1 with Real Betis on Saturday.
Girona, in the top division for only the fourth season in their history, are partly owned by Manchester City’s Abu Dhabi group and have been playing some of the best football in Spain.
Before the weekend, they had won 12 of their first 15 league matches though fluffed their first big test when they lost 3-0 to Real Madrid at home in September.
Not so against Barca who had never lost in six matches against their Catalan rivals in the league and had 31 goal attempts.
“It’s a special victory, it gives us the lead,” said Girona manager Michel Sanchez. “I don’t know if we have the ability to win La Liga, but we are able to beat any opponent.”
