December 18 – The AFC has drawn groups for the 8-team finals of the U-20 Women’s Asian Cup Uzbekistan 2024 that will be played March 3 to 16, 2024.
The top four teams from the U19 Women’s Championship were pre-seeded into the finals along with hosts Uzbekistan. A record entry of 31 nations saw 27 of them, many competing at this age group level internationally for the first time, battle for the last three final slots.
The top four teams will qualify for the U-20 Women’s World Cup Colombia 2024.
Hosts Uzbekistan were drawn in Group A against South Korea, Australia and Chinese Taipei.
Current champions Japan head Group B and will face 2007 winners North Korea, 2006 champions China PR and Vietnam.
The tournament was first held in 2002 and in the the editions since then Japan have won six times with South Korea winning twice and China and North Korea each winning once.
China have hosted six times while North Korea have been losing finalists six times.
Japan beat North Korea in the final 2-1 in Thailand in 2019, the last time the tournament was held as an U19 competition.
Hosts Uzbekistan were originally scheduled to hold the tournament in 2022 but the competition was postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
