February 1 – Having already announced record breaking social media and attendance for the Asian Cup Qatar 2023 that enters the quarter final stage today, the AFC is reporting that the finals tournament is also smashing TV viewership records.
The AFC has a broadcast footprint of more than 160 territories worldwide via 60 media partners and more than 120 channels.
Those partners have recorded a number of broadcast firsts for the Asian Cup including the first time that all Group Stage matches have been transmitted live in markets beyond AFC territories including the USA, Europe, Latin America, and Africa.
Cumulative TV ratings are up 14% from the Group Stage during the 2019 edition.
Part of the uplift has come from free-to-air broadcast in several participating team territories.
AFC General Secretary Datuk Seri Windsor John said: “The preliminary eye-catching TV viewership figures reinforce the growing demand for AFC football and reiterates the world-class platform of the AFC Asian Cup Qatar 2023 for our players, teams and passionate fans alike.
Highlighted best performing territories include Vietnam with over 200 million total TV reach tuning into the Group Stage matches on VTV5 and other local channels – an 84% increase in TV ratings from the 2019 Group Stage.
In South Korea tvN and tvN Sports delivered a 51% TV rating increase from the 2019 Group Stage, with a more than 65 million TV reach as Korea Republic progressed to the Knockout Stage.
Indonesia’s first time qualification for the knockout rounds drew a total of 154 million TV reach on RCTI and other domestic channels.
The AFCs YouTube channel has also seen an increase in views of more than 120% from the entirety of the 2019 edition.
“In addition to a truly global audience outreach so far, we look forward towards working hand in hand with our valued media and broadcast partners as we strive to scale the volume of TV coverage and engage with the hundreds of millions of Asian football fans like never before,” said John.
