Brentford report record revenue of £166.5m, but staff costs grow by £20m

February 14 – Premier League Brentford, currently in their third season in the top flight, have announced a record turnover of £166.5 million for the 2022/23 financial year, the club’s second in the Premier League.

The turnover is a £25.1 million increase on £140.9 million figure for 2021/22. But while the revenue has increased the profit before tax has decreased from £29.9 million to £9.2 million.

The reduction in profit is attributed to a £20 million increase in wages, salaries, social security costs and pensions from £68.152 million to £88.8 million.

Cliff Crown, Brentford chairman, said: “These financial results are pleasing but represent a significant decrease in profitability from the first season in the Premier League. Continued growth of all revenue streams is essential if the club is to continue to invest in the playing squad and in our facilities.”

The club has 243 employees of whom 129 are payer and training staff, while 114 are commercial and administration staff.

Profit on sale of players was £5.6 million, compared to £4.6 million the previous year.

Breaking down Brentford’s revenue figure a massive £135.2 million comes from Premier League central revenues while commercial revenue contributes £18.9 million and matchday income at the 17,250 capacity GTech Stadium is £11.3 million.

The accounts show club owner Matthew Benham’s total investment in the group on 30 June 2023, comprised of equity and loans, was at the same £104.4 million figure as in 2022 – for him it was a good year with the club not only finishing 9th in the Premier League, but also not requiring more of his own money. This sum includes £22.8 million of loans in relation to the stadium project.
