February 27 – With the prospect of facing a first season without a major trophy for 12 years, Bayern Munich have appointed a new sporting director in the shape of Max Eberl to oversee a major shakeup.
Formerly in a similar role at Leipzig, Eberl (pictured), who used to play for Bayern, has been charged with rejuvenating a team that has lost its aura of dominance. He has a contract until June 2027 and will take charge on March 1.
The 50-year-old served as the director of sport at Borussia Monchengladbach for 14 years before joining Leipzig in 2022. Leipzig sacked him in September after reports linked him with a move to Bayern.
“Not only does he have decades of experience in football management, he also started playing at FC Bayern and turned professional here,” Herbert Hainer, chairman of Bayern’s supervisory board, said in a statement.
“We are convinced that he will successfully shape the future of this club.”
Eberl said he would approach his job with “a lot of respect and humility.”
“I spent my entire childhood and youth at FC Bayern and in Munich, so it is something special for me to now return in a new role to the club where it all began.”
Bayern trail Bundesliga leaders Bayer Levekusen by eight points and have already been knocked out of the German cup but still have the Champions League to play for.
The club won the Bundesliga last season after Borussia Dortmund squandered its chance on the final day. Last week it was announced Thomas Tuchel would not be around next season after losing three consecutive games.
Asked why Bayern had worked its way through three highly regarded German coaches in Tuchel, Julian Nagelsmann and Hansi Flick since 2021, Bayern president Herbert Hainer said Saturday that the demands at Bayern were higher than at most clubs.
